During the July Northwoods Art Tour, I had the opportunity to meet so many wonderful people that traveled from Chicago, Milwaukee, the Twin Cities and Canada!

I definitely couldn’t have successfully participated in this art tour without the help of my wonderful friend and my fantastic husband!

My goal is to create artwork that beckons to both the viewer’s eye and sense of touch.

I was honored to receive an award through the participation of the Range Art Association for my original hand pulled print titled “On The Rocks”.

During the Art Tour, I created and demonstrated the art of Intaglio Printmaking. I printed a series of small original hand pulled prints titled “Symphony of Leaves”. The series consists of about 20,  4″x 6″ prints, printed on Rives BFK paper.

You can take the girl out of the Chicago but you can’t take the Chicago spirit out of the girl!  That pretty much describes what motivates my edgier style of artwork.

child's Play -mixed media,printmaking

(above)  Child’s Play was a problematic/naughty creation that had taken me three years to create.  It began as a collagraph print that went rogue on me, so I tucked it away in a drawer for a few years. As time went by,  I had grown and evolved as an artist. So when I found the collagraph print, I knew exactly what to do with it, to make it into an interesting composition.

(below) My series of surrealistic charcoal drawings title Bombus (Latin word meaning BOOM) expresses the feeling/action that I wanted to portray in the drawing Bombus!

Please stop in at iMAGiNETHAT! Art Studio on  July 27-28 -29th from 10:00am- 5:00pm, listed as #14 in the Northwoods Art Tour Guide.

At this time I’m not set up to take credit cards but welcome cash and checks.

Bombus 3 and 4

(below) This composition titled BILLIE  is created with handmade paper.   The paper pulp was applied to a free-form mold.  Once the pulp had dried I applied a variety of permanent metallic paints and mounted the sculpture onto a wood background that’s covered with fabric.  Please stop in the studio to find out why this composition was given this title!

(below) The series title SNAP has a special story connected to my dear childhood friend that inspired me to create artwork using a very unusual method.  Please stop in the studio and ask me to tell you the story behind this artwork! iMAGiNETHAT Art Studio is #14 on the self- guided tour of the Northwoods Art Tour brochure. Please take a few minutes to view some of the new pages that I added to my blog today.  At the top of my website, I’ve added pages that showcase the following three themes: Munsey and Boda Merchandise – Artwork Gallery and Photography.

DSC_9527 charcoal drawing titled Munsey

The drawing of Munsey had taken me about a solid 24 hours of time from start to finish.  Of course I didn’t sit down for 24 hours and draw the composition all at one time.  I spent about a month working on this drawing, while I worked on other bear related collages.

I used multiple photographs of Munsey in order to get the lighting and perspective of the bear captured correctly.  The fur coat was drawn three different layers because it needed to capture the muscle tone, the bears under coat as well as his wispier top coat.

This wasn’t an easy draw and I had to constantly remind myself that I could accomplish this task if I persevered!  So, I was was very pleased with the end result!

Once I had drawn out the basic outline of the bear in pencil,  I used powered charcoal, feathers, a sham, various types of erasers to draw the this composition.  I had the most fun drawing the fur coat because it lends itself to be more abstract.

This composition is one of 10 new collages created to address autism.  The series is titled “Leap of Faith”  Each original collage is comprised from fragments of artwork that were created as paintings and original prints. Through cutting, punching, burning and/or tearing processes, I’ve altered former pieces of artwork into a new composition.

The process of drawing this 32″ x 36″ charcoal drawing titled  Munsey was a task that had taken me out of my comfort zone. While drawing Munsey, I discovered that I used the same drawing techniques that  I had used when I was drawing a series title Bombus  which was a more surrealistic group of drawings.  When drawing with powdered charcoal I always enjoy experimenting with more unorthodox tools to create my marks.  I use any materials that have a slightly tacky surface that helps me create interesting marks which help me create organic formations and interesting textures.

The bone structure of the Kodiak cub was used as a guide when creating the tufts of fur throughout the composition.  When I’m drawing, I always hyper-focus  on the details and use multiple photographs to help me me make the observations in regards to bone structure, lighting and creating depth through lighting and developing texture in in the composition.

I spent over 24 hours drawing Munsey but I’m not sure of the amount of time I spent observing and photographing the two Kodiak cubs, so I could have a reference as to how to proceed in the creation of the composition.

Bombus is a charcoal drawing that is 3′ x 5′ and was also created with the same drawing techniques as the composition Munsey. To learn more about NORTHWOODS ART TOUR go to northwoodsarttour.comwendlandt_s_bombus_1jpg
